The burgeoning mobile content services market in the Indian Sub-continent is targeted to reach more than US$8.3 billion by 2013 from $3 billion in 2008. Revenue streams will be largely driven by data traffic from games, ringtones and music downloads, browsing and mobile TV, according to a new report from Juniper Research.
India’s mobile phone subscribers totalled 286 million as of June. The number of wireless subscribers in the region is expected to rise from 431 million in 2008 to 740 million in 2013, spearheaded by India with the largest share of revenue followed by neighbouring Pakistan.
There were a total of 88.1 million cellular subscribers in Pakistan by end June, covering over half of its 165 million population, and a far cry from the 300,000 phones owned just 8 years ago, according to figures from market regulator the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.
Mobilink was the market leader with 32.03 million customers, followed by Telenor with 18.13 mil. Ufone was in third place with 18.1 mil subscribers, while Warid finished the year with 15.49 mil subscribers.
For the month of June, about 1.3 million new mobile subscribers were added, led by Warid (Source: Telecompk.net).
