Over 15 brands of China-made products have been taken off the shelves, according to ChannelNewsAsia, amid growing consumer concern in Singapore over the tainted milk scandal.
Sheng Siong supermart chain has removed over 20 products as a precautionary measure, including bread and biscuits. These include Want Want Crunchy Wafer, Oreo Wafer Sticks, Snickers Peanut snack-sized bars, and Dove Hazelnut Milk Chocolate.
The Straits Times reported that one 7-Eleven outlet had pulled a list of products from its shelves, which includes the above items and M&Ms, Nabisco Chicken In A Biskit, Mentos yogurt balls and Want Want Take One Baby Bites. A further check found that the Snickers and Dove chocolates sold at a 7-Eleven convenience store were made in the United States, while those same chocolate brands sold at a neighbouring minimart were labeled ‘Product of China’.
Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority had earlier confirmed that the “White Rabbit Creamy Candy” from China is also contaminated with melamine, along with two other affected products, “Yili Brand” Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt Flavoured Ice Confection” and “Dutch Lady” brand of strawberry flavoured milk.
Major supermarkets here such as Cold Storage and NTUC FairPrice are also playing it safe by checking that items made in other countries do not contain dairy from China. Items such as condensed milk, crackers and butter have also been recalled.
